Meta Is Disabling LGBTQ+ Business Accounts. Savoy Orlando Is the Latest.

On October 20, 2026, two days after Orlando Pride, Meta disabled Savoy Orlando's Instagram account, @savoyorlando. The stated reason was a “human exploitation” violation. Meta never identified a single post or activity behind the decision.

Cleared on Appeal, Then Disabled Anyway

We appealed the same day. Within hours, Instagram emailed us saying it had reviewed the account, found that it follows Meta's Community Standards, apologized for the mistake, and said we could use the account again.

The account was never restored. We then received a final notice saying it was permanently disabled, with no further appeals allowed.

Since then we've opened multiple Meta Business Support cases. More than a week later, no human at Meta has responded. As far as we can tell, every step, from the flag to the appeal, has been handled by automated systems with no human oversight.

We support moderation that keeps people safe. But when an automated system gets it wrong, there needs to be a real person who can review the decision and correct it.

Why One Instagram Account Matters

Savoy is more than a nightclub. It's a gathering space for Orlando's LGBTQ+ community, hosting local plays, fundraisers, celebrations of life, and more. Instagram is how we tell our community what's happening each week. More than 70 employees and over 100 local entertainers, DJs, and vendors depend on that promotion to make a living. We're also a paying Meta advertiser. Losing the account, and the 15,000 followers it took two decades to build, has hurt sales.

A Nationwide Pattern of LGBTQ+ Instagram Suspensions

Savoy is not alone. LGBTQ+ venues across the country have reported similar suspensions:

  • Austin: Rain on 4th's Instagram was shut down and then restored weeks later, with no explanation. (LGBTQ Nation)
  • San Francisco: Beaux, Powerhouse, and The Stud have all had accounts suspended. (GO Magazine)
  • Los Angeles: Precinct's account came back only after patrons pressured Meta. (Mashable)
  • Australia: Adelaide queer party HEY DADDY had its accounts permanently disabled over an alleged “Human Exploitation” violation, the same reason given to Savoy. (Star Observer)

GLAAD has warned that Meta's systems are wrongly suspending LGBTQ accounts at an extremely high rate, causing serious harm to business owners. (GO Magazine) The New York Times has also reported that Meta increasingly relies on AI both to decide which accounts break its rules and to handle appeals, which leaves users with little way to reach a person. (The New York Times)

LGBTQ+ Bars Were Already Under Pressure in 2026

These suspensions come at a hard time for queer nightlife.

Closures are piling up. At least 20 gay bars have closed so far this year. (Queerty) In Texas, at least 15 LGBTQ+ bars, clubs, and businesses have closed since 2020. (Houston Chronicle)

People are going out less. Younger queer people are drinking less, and some New York bar owners have started closing early to cut costs. (LGBTQ News) In Washington, D.C., owners told the Washington Blade that federal layoffs appear to have cut into the number of people going out to bars and restaurants, LGBTQ+ venues included. (Washington Blade)

Policy changes hit close to home. In August, a federal appeals court upheld Florida's law restricting venues from hosting drag shows attended by minors, overturning an earlier order that had blocked it. Hamburger Mary's, which challenged the law, has since moved from Orlando to Kissimmee and now limits drag brunches to guests 18 and older. (Metro Weekly)

Safety is a constant concern. Orlando knows this better than anywhere: the 2016 Pulse shooting remains one of the deadliest attacks on the LGBTQ+ community in U.S. history. Since then, bar owners have said Homeland Security and the FBI warned them about an uptick in anti-LGBTQ violence. (The Advocate)

When a venue is already dealing with rising costs, fewer customers, new laws, and safety threats, losing its main marketing channel overnight can be the difference between staying open and closing.

What We're Asking For

We're not asking for special treatment. We're asking Meta for a fair process: a real person to review our account and honor the decision Instagram already made in our favor.
